Ask anyone who takes their mezze seriously and they will tell you: hummus is deceptively hard to get right. It looks simple, chickpeas, tahini, lemon, garlic and good olive oil, yet the difference between average and outstanding comes down to care. That is exactly the gap we set out to close when people started calling ours the best hummus in Nottingham.
What great hummus actually needs
A proper bowl of hummus should be silky rather than grainy, generous with tahini, bright with lemon and finished with a slick of good olive oil. Getting there means cooking the chickpeas until they are properly soft, blending patiently then seasoning with confidence. There are no shortcuts. You can taste when someone has tried to take one.
Made fresh, served generously
At ZHUG we make our hummus in-house and serve it the way it should be served, generously, with warm, fresh-baked pita for scooping. It sits at the heart of our mezze alongside baba ganoush, tabbouleh and our halloumi fries. It is a natural partner to falafel and gyros too.
You will find it near the top of our mezze menu, where it is easiest to order for the table.
Where to try it
You will find it at both of our Nottingham homes.
Our original restaurant sits on Bramcote Lane in Wollaton, a short walk from the park. There is more on that neighbourhood in our guide to finding a Halal restaurant near Wollaton Park. Our city-centre site is on Broad Street in Hockley, handy if you are planning a pre-theatre dinner in Nottingham.
Both are Halal, with vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options clearly marked, so hummus lovers of every kind are welcome.
Hummus for a crowd
A bowl of hummus is made for sharing, which is why it turns up on almost every menu we build for weddings and parties. Our Mediterranean event catering can bring the whole mezze spread to you, for 30 guests or 300.
Come and decide for yourself
We think it earns the title. The only way to settle it is to taste it.
Book a table at ZHUG Wollaton or ZHUG Hockley, or order online and judge it from the sofa.
